Example Use of Distribution Servers

To better illustrate the use of distribution servers, here is a network diagram of a typical implementation.

network diagram with 2 remote regions outside corporate headquarters

In this example we have a business, let’s say a hospital, that has a corporate headquarters and two regional sites. By positioning a distribution server at each regional site, whenever files need to be downloaded to the regional target machines, they can be quickly accessed using the speedier local network. Without a distribution server, the files would have to be accessed from either the distant console or from the vendor websites using the slower wide area network. A distribution server is not needed at the corporate headquarters because the target machines there have quick and easy access to the Security Controls console.
